Burgundy 2008 En Primeur

"A rabbit out of the hat!"

Charlie and myself have been busy tasting the 2008 Burgundies and have been delighted with what we found. The vintage was looking particularly tricky until 14th Sept 2008 when nature pulled a rabbit out of the hat, sending down a wonderfully drying northerly wind, saving the vintage. It's a real "wheat from chaff" vintage with those that harvested last and then selected the grapes most thoroughly being rewarded with some exceptional wines. We have been very happily surprised by the quality of the Domaines that we have found, including several new to us.

As we’re all painfully aware sourcing Bordeaux in the year 2009 at the lower end (ie. sub £30 bt) is a particularly hazardous, unrewarding task at the best of times! For those who aren’t in the know, this is the 2nd wine of Quinault L’Enclos (the mega bucks St Emilion garagiste wine). Vintagewise we’re particularly liking the 01s at the moment as most are now fully evolved and deliciously ripe due to the more forward nature of the year. The 2001 Fleur de Quinault is a wine packed full of dark plum, black cherry, cassis and raspberry flavours with integrated oak and one that will drink beautifully over the festive period.
